Why I Volunteer- Macduff’s Story
For Macduff, the journey started many years before joining Blood Bikes Wales
” As a youngster, I used to accompany my dad when he went to donate blood. He started giving blood at the age of 18 whilst stationed in Liverpool during the Second World Wat. When I was old enough to donate, he came with me to my very first session.”
The family tradition of helping others has continued ever since ” I’m now just about to reach my 80th blood donation.”
The connection with Blood Bikes Wales came later when Kay, then a Team Supervisor and someone who had seen first-hand the impact of the charity’s work, suggested he might be interested in joining We met again at my 75th blood donation award ceremony and she encouraged me to get involved. I followed her advice and was delighted to be accepted into my new gang and begin a new journey supporting the NHS”
The story doesn’t stop there
“My son is a biker and a blood donor too. I went with him to his first donation session, just as my dad had done for me, and that made me incredibly proud. One day, I might even persuade him to join this very special tribe” Three generations. One shared commitment to helping others.
From his father’s first donation during wartime, to almost 80 donations of his own, to supporting the NHS through Blood Bikes Wales, Macduff’s story is a wonderful reminder that volunteering and community spirit can be passed from one generation to the next.
